a change of owner (without one word to us customers) and a decrease in support quality (still waiting an answer for a ticket published 10 days ago) are forcing me find to find something else besides the fact I want to move away from my current Windows 2008 to a Windows 2016 which is even more expensive.
I am currently shopping around, have got a couple of potentials providers solvps.com and hostkey.com, to find a new home for my about 80 websites. Currently I have got a Windows 2008 server with 2 cores processor, 6Mb of Ram an 85 Gb of hard disk (roughly half of it being used by the OS (it sounds to me like a lot) and the other half by my data).
I am in search of new home with the following caracteristics:
- Located in a (US) geographical area safe from natural disaster such as earthquake above 7 on a Richter scale, tsunami or flooding. (It might sounds weird but I am living in such area and wouldn't host anything here, in another words not located in Los Angeles or San Francisco (nothing personal, just being cautious, when you have experienced a 8.8 you're marked for life))
- Windows Server 2016 (or 2012) with RDP Access where I wish to run Server Name Indication (SNI) extension so I can have multiple SSL Certificates for a single IP address
- Enough disk space to have 50Gb of data and the required disk space for the OS
- Plesk (I have got 80+ domains)
- Free DNS Service for my domains (I guess Plesk offers this doesn't it ? )
- A support team fluent in English available 24x7
- Backup (Offsite if possible)
- My budget is about US$55 per month, I would like to pay annually and appreciate a trial period.

Questions:
Anybody around running a similar VPS in my budget range ?
People having had experience with solvps.com, mochaHost or hostkey.com ?

They said they will charge you more for the Windows 2016 license? That really doesn't make any sense, as the cost is the same

Yes, for the same disk space, ram, bandwith and processors $83/mo vs $71/mo

Sorry, it's not the same, the cost of Windows licensing changed between Win2012 and Win2016.

Many companies are increasing the cost of the license, Softlayer(IBM) did it a few months ago.

Can't comment on any suggestions on what you're looking for, however have in mind that WS2008(r2) has a huge history of updates which add on to the size of your system disk. WS2016 will be 20-25GB at most.

Microsoft has increased the licensing costs to SPLA members, this is why you are seeing the cost of license go up to the end user. We have actually seen an increase twice this year. One back in Jan and one this last month. There is no price difference between 2008R2 / 2012 / 2012R2 / 2016, but I can see some companies trying to charge more for the older versions on a new install to push people to 2016. Not a super smart business idea, but I can understand it.

Saying that, unless you find a host that is using Windows Datacenter version to license the entire server, the Windows license alone should be around $20/mo. Datacenter maybe a little less, as it allows all VPSes on the server to be licensed, but the increase cost of that license has to be spread across all the VPSes to make smart business practices.

For example, a Dual CPU server the license could be $500+ month. Assume I put 32 VPSes on that server, it would make the license closer to $15/mo.

That combined with a Plesk VPS license of around $25/mo you are basically asking for a VPS that costs $10-15/mo. That is a lot to ask for at that price point without getting an extremely over sold server.

The increase in the cost of the license was almost $3, for the hardware configuration I am using.

Dear Customer,

We have important information to share with you regarding Windows Operating System pricing.

Beginning June 1st, pricing for Windows Operating System will be changing for all new server provisions.

For Virtual Servers, we’ll be aligning the pricing for all editions and changing the pricing model. Windows Server Standard on Virtual Servers will be priced per-core. Generally speaking, smaller Virtual Server configurations will see a price decrease, while larger configurations will see an increase.

On Bare Metal, all Windows editions will be aligned to the current Windows 2016 prices.

These prices will better reflect the costs imposed by the new Service Provider License Agreement. For more information about Third Party Service provider products, please review our Product Lifecycle Policy on the IBM/SoftLayer Legal page.

We are always working to help you increase efficiency and lower infrastructure costs on IBM Cloud. We have several new initiatives planned for delivery this year to help you do just that.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact us at the information below, or open a support ticket in the customer portal.
